Pre Adoption Application

We at Greyhound Rescue are pleased that you are considering letting a Greyhound into your lives. Greyhounds can make wonderful companions. It has been our experience that greyhounds are gentle, sweet, sensitive, affectionate, playful and intelligent dogs.
Greyhounds are usually very "greytful" for being given a second chance and you may very well end up with the best friend you've ever had.
We have worked in Greyhound rescue for many years and have seen many happy endings and unfortunately we have also seen a few sad ones. So, although we may seem a bit over protective we have only the best interest of the dog in mind.
Before signing this agreement, please know that Greyhounds can live to be 12 - 14 years old. This is a serious commitment you are making. Are you prepared to do so? Before answering please consider the following:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • moving
  • having children
  • cost of properly caring for the dog etc.
It's very traumatic for a dog to be abandoned by it's family once it has settled into it's new home, and pets should never be considered dispensable.
Furthermore, note that the Greyhound is not for everyone. These dogs rely on us to place them into appropriate, loving, responsible homes.
Two very good books worth reading are:

  • Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan
  • Guide to Adopting an Ex-Racing Greyhound by Carolyn Raeke
Both books are very helpful and are available at most pet stores or in Greyhound catalogs.
